Joe Trippi, pioneer of using online tools in political campaigns, made a very interesting statement last Friday. He said, we've seen the use of radio by FDR and television by JFK, but now "we are going to see a networked president."
Mr. Trippi was speaking at a panel discussion at the New Politics Institute's all day event called New Tools and New Audiences. The successful campaign will be"bottom-up, not top-down," Mr. Trippi told the audience. This grassroots mobilization is what he was able to harness in the Dean campaign, and he said its what Barak Obama has been able to utilize in this race. But as impressive as the Obama campaign is (online), he said, "a few years from now there will be a campaign that make's Obama's campaign look like chump change. But things can't take off unless the people in the campaign understand that we need to take the bottom up approach."
Podcasting is quickly being embraced by nonprofits around the world because it can be such an effective, personal medium of communication. But many organizations have yet to jump on board because they're not sure what kind of investment is needed for materials and equipment. So we've broken it down for you - here is a brief description of the hardware and software you'll need to get started producing your own podcasts.
Hello all,
I wanted to draw your attention to an event the Campaign for a New American Policy on Iran (CNAPI) is having on Tuesday June 10 on the Cannon balcony. The event, will be a "Diplomacy Shout Out." In coordination with Enough Fear we will be setting up a row of 60's-era red "hotline" telephones allowing anyone passing by to talk to regular Iranians with the U.S. Capitol dome as a backdrop.
The Stanley Foundation will soon be rolling out parts of a multi-media exploration titled "Rising Powers: The New Global Reality." Our goal is to spark dialogue about the changing global order and America's place in this new world.
We plan to do this by examining a number of countries and cross-cutting themes challenging the world's current power structure. Looking at recent books and magazines, this idea of a changing global order (and the unfortunate companion concept of a declining United States) is certainly gaining currency. We are hoping our presentations avoid the fear frame and lead to positive and constructive discussion about the opportunities present in this transition.

In light of growing concern over the production and use of cluster munitions deemed to cause "unacceptable harm to civilians", the forthcoming international conference in Dublin (commencing on May 19th) is set to agree a treaty limiting the use of these weapons.
A ban on certain cluster munitions would have a widespread impact, and there are many implications to be drawn from such a treaty.
